
The MTA board approved a massive, almost $32 billion plan Wednesday to maintain and upgrade its aging infrastructure and add new projects like countdown clocks for the letter lines and bringing the Second Avenue Subway to East Harlem– but faces a massive $15.2 billion funding gap.
The subway system is slated to receive the lion’s share of the funding, with about $15.5 billion going to pay for projects that include a thousand brand new subway cars and 84 miles of new track.
Board members criticized the lack of dollars for promised projects in underserved areas like Staten Island, such as bus rapid transit to serve the world’s largest Ferris wheel that is coming in 2016, as well as 40 new outlet stores and a hotel
