Another setback for the Ventra fare payment system came Wednesday when some card readers at 60 Chicago Transit Authority (IL) rail stations failed during the evening rush hour. The glitch meant 15,000 free rides for commuters before the problem was fixed.
CTA said that a “back-office server” malfunctioned around 4:30 p.m. which shut down readers for 15-90 minutes. Customer service agents waved riders through the malfunctioning fare gates.
Overall, 165 card readers (out of 800 total) were affected; buses were not affected. CTA officials said they will bill Ventra contractor Cubic Transportation Systems for the costs of the outage.
