The Mysteries of the R1/9 Rollsign

The R1/9 rollsign that I purchased on Ebay for $100 just arrived, and I would like to take this time to share it with you. Here are two pictures of the front and back:

There are various curiosities of this rollsign, which I will go over.

1) On the (J) sign, there appears to be a letter covered up with tape...

Well, for the answer to this question we need to look only on the other side.

It appears someone removed the tape from this side of the sign, leaving the space where the (Q) is frayed and worn out.

2) The Tape next to the (K) :

Since both sides still have the tape intact, I don't know for sure what is under it. It's probably another (K) since I don't recall there being any other (XK) route in which X is a letter of the alphabet.

3) The rollsign abruptly ends below the (QJ) / (J) sign, and is connected to an (SS) route that is made in a different style from the rest of the sign:

While the rest of the routes are double-sided, the (SS) appears only on the "outside" part. On the inside that area is blank.

There were obviously more routes below the (QJ) / (J) ; what were they and why were they removed, only to be replaced with a poorly done (SS) sign?

These are the mysteries of the R1/9 rollsign; let's see if we can solve them.
