The is calling in a cleaning crew to tackle graffiti at Select Bus Service stops. A $314,496 three-year contract to tidy up dirty bus stations would require crews to hand-clean streetside fare collection equipment, scrape off stickers and power wash the surrounding sidewalks, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Unlike regular buses, passengers pay for +Select Bus+ rides on the street before boarding in order to speed up service. Graffiti and stickers can obstruct decals letting riders know they have to pay before riding, officials said. The
has handled cleaning duties on its own, but the agency decided it could save money with a private company as +Select Bus Service+ grew to seven routes. “It made more sense and was more cost-effective,”
spokesman Kevin Ortiz said. The
board’s transit committee Monday backed the contract with DynaServe, which handles bus stop cleaning for the city Department of Transportation. The full
board must approve the deal.
