Would TTC style sign codes work in NYC?

I feel that in NYC if we modified the sign codes to where each routes had it's corridor of service placed on the main destination sign it would make the sign codes shorter and help make the system easier to navigate. For example on the Bx26 the codes would be revised to say Allerton Av on the top line and To Lehman College or To Co-op City Sec 5 on the bottom line. This way we eliminate the via Allerton refresh and have a constant reminder to riders that Bx26 is the Allerton Av route. The main benefit I would see though is riders finding the map easier to read and the network grid more interconnected given riders would care more to know that the Bx26 runs along Allerton Av then it terminates at Lehman College or in Co-op City. My question is would such code revisions actually work to achieve these hypothesized benefits?
