Fast subway cars?

http://www.nycsubway.org/wiki/R-44_(St._Louis,_1971-1973)

How did the r44 get so fast on the test track? doesn't it have the same 115hp per axle (according to wikipedia) like the r32/r38? if it has different gearing, won't that take a big hit on acceleration? it even reached 77 mph with only half the motors! the LIRR had 650v but that can't be such a big difference from the subway's 600v! the r44 was even built by the same people as the r38! on top of all of that, the r44 is even heavier and longer than the r32/r38! so what makes the r44 so different that allows it to go so fast? because it seems that if anything, it should be even slower! when i drove the r38 in bve simulator i put it on max throttle and it won't even reach 40 sometimes! unless wikipedia is wrong and the r44 actually has like 200hp per axle

the reason why is because i want to build a model subway layout and i want to run the trains as fast as they can run in real life
