I was caught in this mess yesterday, I arrived at the station around 4:20 p.m. to find large crowds inside and outside and all the southbound station signs flashing "Delayed". Thought it was a pedestrian incident, but then heard it was a switch problem.
I couldn't go home my other route, because there were problems there too, and it was getting over crowded. And people get super agitated with delays.
Luckially my dad works in Itasca, along the Milwaukee District-West line, I was able to have him pick me up in Roselle (after he had a beer ) and bring me home
Delays were up to 80+ minutes.
So I was talking to a classmate (former CTA employee with RR connections), he told me three things happened:
- Amtrak Switch frog broke
- Amtrak Rail broke
- Train blew a signal.
So yeah this was Amtraks fault.
The first two caused there to be a bottleneck in the yard, because nothing could move in and out from the southside.
To add on- I was on a UP-W train (my other regular line) this morning in 19 degree weather with no HEP. Ment no heat or lights. Cold but I made it.
